Law, as a legal expression and a mechanism of social control, has been studied from various perspectives. Sociological analysis constitutes one such perspective. Within the field of the sociology of law, the Marxist-structuralist school has drawn heavily on the work of the Russian theorist and jurist Pashukanis and his theory of commodity exchange and legal form, and on how this contributes to the sociological analysis of law. Similarly, this approach has expanded the materialist-critical study of law in recent decades. This article presents, in a descriptive and expository manner, the main components of that theory, complementing them with some sociological reflections.
