Abstract

This essay examines those ideas of Ignacio Ellacuría that remain relevant today and provide the foundation for critical and liberating thought. Even before discourses on globalization became widespread, Ellacuría approached the global perspective as the only way to understand contemporary historical reality—characterized by the impoverishment and exclusion of the vast majority—and thus to glimpse the real possibilities for overcoming historical negativity. Ellacuría thus proposes a philosophy in which the question of the structure and meaning of history regains its significance, with the aim of illuminating and driving practical processes of liberation or emancipation. The author’s starting point is to understand philosophy as a way of life that involves an existential engagement with the unveiling and revelation of reality, where theory and praxis intersect.
