Abstract

This text is the lecture the author delivered at the “José Simeón Cañas” Central American University (UCA) in San Salvador in 2014, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the assassination of Ignacio Ellacuría. The lecture highlights Ellacuría’s principal contributions to theology, philosophy, politics, and the university, set against the backdrop of Xavier Zubiri’s thought. The author highlights the significance of the concepts of “reality” and “sentient intelligence” in the position Ellacuría adopted within his historical context—a position essential for framing the commitment of Jesuit universities to truth, justice, and freedom.
