Abstract

The enthusiasm surrounding the beatification of Archbishop Romero cannot hide the fact that the martyred archbishop is a very uncomfortable figure for certain sectors of Salvadoran society. This discomfort has led the government and certain sectors of the Church to create two myths—one nationalist and the other spiritualist—to make him acceptable. The great challenge posed by Archbishop Romero is his prophetic dimension, the ultimate reason for his martyrdom. His fidelity to the God of Jesus and to his kingdom led him to prophecy, and prophecy led him to martyrdom.
