Abstract

This essay analyzes some of the motivations expressed by ordinary citizens in their questioning of and dissatisfaction with political options. Public frustration is beginning to manifest itself in a loss of trust in institutions and institutional legal frameworks. The null vote is, consequently, a way of demanding not “democratic representation,” but democratic participation and the introduction of direct citizen action, involving more citizens without the need for long-term party affiliations. This questioning—through the nullification of the vote—of political parties and the political class as formal institutions of representative democracy may hold the key to truly democratic changes in society and its institutions.
