The burnout syndrome: a modern problem

Abstract

The concept given to stress by the Feld of biology has had a powerful influence in psychology and medicine. There is a wide variety of stressors which keep the organism in a state of overexcitement due to the fight or flfight response. The work environment is one of the most common known sources of chronic stressors. The burnout syndrome is one of many alterations that appear as a consequence of exceeding our adaptation mechanisms. This disorder is characterized by emotional distress, depersonalization and a decreased feeling for personal fulfillment. This altogether triggers a group of symptoms that carry multiple consequences in the quality of life of those who suffer from it. This article addresses this syndrome´s definition, its risk factors, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and diagnosis. Finally, it includes a description for its prevention and treatment.
