The present investigation tries to define the necessary criteria to implement ecological roofs and variants of them in existing multifamily housing buildings, specifically in the metropolitan area of San Salvador. Starting from the benefits that the garden roofs have, this solution is seen from the point of view of contributing to the balance of the climatological activities, such as generating a surface that absorbs the excess of rainwater to reduce the potential of floods and also as barriers of the different pollutants of the air, typical of the city. Based on the physical and climatological characteristics and its history, regarding natural phenomena in San Salvador and how these have affected the city and how it responds to them, three different solutions are proposed, with the intention of reducing the harmful effects of the constant growth of the city and the attitudes taken towards it
