Abstract

Throughout human history, knowledge was the differentiating element between yesterday and tomorrow, between poverty and wealth, between the backwardness and development of peoples. With the appearance of Christianity, the value of faith was accepted, but this was confirmed with the support of reason and spread through education. Learning and teaching are processes that are particularly important to assess where education is currently going, since these basic assumptions continue to dominate the formative process of the human being.
The universities were born within the European civil society, "Los Burgos", where teachers and apprentices exercised reason to seek the truth, although always under religious restriction and with the patronage of kings and princes. While the University of Bologna was born at the behest of the students who wanted to learn, the University of Paris was born at the initiative of the teachers who wanted to teach. During the colonial era of Latin America, the first universities were founded under the religious leadership of Dominicans, Franciscans, Augustinians and Jesuits.
