Abstract

The second volume of the work on the History of the economy of the province of El Salvador from the sixteenth century to the present day is dedicated to the fifth and eighteenth centuries.
In this period of approximately two hundred years, overcome the problems and needs of the process of conquest, establish and develop the structures, elements and characteristics of the complex colonial system, which would define the economic activities, the social fabric and the customs of the Central American peoples, integrated in the Kingdom of Guatemala.
The fever of finding and exploring gold, very scarce in our lands, had given way to reality. The Spanish were forced to recognize the agricultural vocation of the lands of the region, and, therefore, the only way to get rich was to explore the exuberance of the land, as well as an abundant human wealth, in the hands of the Indians who cultivated it.
