Abstract

In the nineties, youth gangs were profiled as the most important and complex cultural-generational phenomenon that El Salvador has had.
The high number of young people involved in this form of organization and socialization, as well as their presence throughout the national territory, have made this phenomenon and the ways of life that it implies, an integral part of the daily life of Salvadorans.
In order to analyze the problem of gangs, the United Nations Children's Fund -UNICEF- and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences -FLACSO- El Salvador Program, promoted a research project called "El Phenomenon de las Gangs in El Salvador". Salvador ", which was in charge of the graduates Marcela Smutt and Jeny Lissette E. Miranda.
