Abstract

The economic costs associated with the treatment of complications due to type 2 diabetes mellitus represent a heavy burden for health services. This research aims to: Determine hospital costs generated by complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients admitted to the Internal Medicine service of the Yolanda Mayorga Primary Hospital, Tipitapa municipality, department of Managua, in the second half of 2021, having as justification to allow the institution to make improvements in the budget for medicines and periodic replacement materials used in patients admitted to the Internal Medicine Room. Materials and methods: This research is based on the estimation of costs by applying the ABC method (cost-based activity) of the Yolanda Mayorga primary hospital in Tipitapa of the internal medicine service. The study is an economic evaluation of quantitative approach with random sampling 155 records of patients admitted in the period established in the study who meet the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Results: For this study, a total cost in 6 months of C$1,848,262.52 was obtained. The complication that generates the most expenses is diabetic foot with a total of C$ 14,216.16, the medications used for hypoglycemia generate an expense of C$ 12,622.08, the use of the medications used for the complication of hyperosmolar state generates a total cost of C$, 2,187.06, the female sex is the most affected, the laboratory tests generate a total cost for this study of C$ 4,250.75, the periodic replacement materials a total of C$ 63,827.22 and the costs in basic services of the institution are equivalent to C$ 550,160.80. Conclusion: This study shows that diabetic complications generate excessive expenditure on both medication and replenishment material, which entails a large part of the annual budget of the unit.
