The overall objective of this study was to explore the risk factors for the development of oral diseases and their relationship to breastfeeding. The Human Development Report El Salvador 2013 of the United Nations Development Programme (undp) –in its proposal for the design of public policies– proposes the need for effective interventions to ensure the rights of people even before they are born and the guarantee of adequate living conditions for women of childbearing age and pregnant women. Malnutrition is a major risk to human health. In newborns, breastfeeding meets all their nutritional needs and has a positive effect on maxillofacial development. In this qualitative research, the analysis units were twenty-five mothers of children under the age of five living in the canton of San Isidro Los Planes, two paediatric dental specialists and two orthodontists. Among the conclusions are that mothers are aware of the importance of breastfeeding and oral hygiene techniques in the proper feeding of their babies, but are unaware of their importance as an adjunct in the muscular-facial and skeletal development of children. They also said they know about oral hygiene techniques but do not practice them, and experts say that breastfed children have a faster and more appropriate transition to solid food.
