Abstract

The concept of leadership is a relatively new concept. Prior to the 1930’s there was not much academic interest in the area of leadership as evidenced by the limited availability of material on the subject. The interest was more in the traditional aspects of operations management: execute specific actions through others on the basis of power; in the basis of knowledge of the subject matter; or on the basis of rather rigorous administrative systems. The purpose of this article is to review the evolutionary process of the leadership concept, understood as the execution of actions through others based on the characteristics of a leader; and to define these characteristics so as to arrive at a concrete definition of what constitutes a modern corporate leader.
