This is an exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, of an initial progress of a doctoral thesis, through which the texts of Professor Giovanni Riva, philosopher, literary writer, poet, and founder of numerous solidarity works in favor of the most needy, will be analyzed; mainly in Latin American countries, such as universities and schools, among others.
Riva, through the initiatives he carried out, proposed a different way of understanding material resources and one’s own capacities; not only in the service of the individual but in favor of others. He called this: “Companionship Economy.” It is considered that a review of the proposals of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church on social and economic issues will help to a better interpretation of Riva’s ideas; on the other hand, recourse has been made to already structured economic theories with visions similar to those of the author under study, such as the proposal of “Economy for Life” by Hinkelammert and Mora.
In the context of the controversies between conventional and heterodox economics, it is considered that this type of theoretical economic contributions can contribute more and more to the sense of being of economics as a social science.
