Abstract

During the Late Preclassic Period on the South Coast of Mesoamerica, two highly significant political entities flourished, Kaminaljuyu and Chalchuapa, distant from each other and possibly of different cultural affiliations. Both political entities underwent cultural and social transformations, both achieving an urban landscape of complex society. Through sculptures, they represent power and ideology. Also taking into account the prominent sites, it is possible that several political entities coexisted, as independent capitals of a wide local región.
