Two emergencies: Gender-Based Violence and COVID-19, in México

Abstract

Gender- based violence (GBV) is a challenge to achieving gender equity and ensurin a life free of violence for women.  Once the emergency due to the spread ot the virus that causes the sickness of Covid-19 began, whit the subsequent confinement measures adopted by Mexico, cases of GBV have increased. This article is of a legal type and is derived from a research project; conducts a review of texts from academic sources, NGOs and oficial decrees on the impacta of confinement measures on GBV, whit the purpose of reflecto n the extreme violence experienced by women, within the framework of the quarantine to contain the spread of Covid-19. The docuement is structure in two sections and a conclusión. The first addresses GBV as a structural and chronic problema in Mexico. In the second section, provides information on the wosening of violence against women and girls in the current pandemic, with special attention to feminicides. Data are shown that allow us to affirm that confinement aggravates GBV, a problema thatit is urgent to be attended by the state authorities. Finally, it concludes whit the need to address both problems that are an emergency that plagues Mexico.
