The word of marriage as a legal fi gure occupied an important place in the civil relations of the Honduran colonial era, serving as the fi rst formal step before the celebration of marriage and, therefore, with suffi cient legal weight to justify the beginning of a process given its breach. This article explores the evolution of the
legal validity of the word of marriage in the fi nal years of application of Indian law in the Spanish colonies, specifi cally in the jurisdiction of the town of Tegucigalpa and its Mayoralty. For the research, the “Fondo de la Alcaldía Mayor” contained in the “Archivo Nacional de Honduras”, fi nding fi ve cases concerning the object of study.
