Abstract

Gardens are resistance initiatives that face multiple challenges and opportunities in the university context. Often, these projects lack institutional recognition, putting their benefits and success at risk. This research aimed to highlight the most significant experiences and reflections of the Mocambo campus garden at Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico, from a historical perspective. The historical construct of this study was developed using a biographical-narrative approach and participant observation techniques. Key findings were grouped into four historical phases of the garden: emergence, formalization-growth, decline, and resurgence. The study reflected on the emerging benefits of working in the garden, the main challenges faced along the way, and future obstacles. Activities brought together students and faculty from various disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary spaces for reflection on sustainability. The documented experience showcases a notable trajectory with ups and downs that can serve as a guide to help other initiatives avoid similar mistakes and draw inspiration from successes.
