Clostridioides difficile RT596: a non-toxigenic multidrug-resistant strain

Abstract

Clostridioides difficile is a One Health pathogen responsible for antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Its epidemiology is dynamic and overlap between human and animal hosts has been reported globally. The aim of the present investigation is to characterize isolates obtained from animal feces that could act as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Using culture, PCR, ribotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) techniques, 10 non-toxigenic isolates of C. difficile were characterized. All of them were identified as RT596, a strain that has been previously documented in animals and humans. In addition, the isolates revealed four multidrug resistance (MDR) profiles. Our findings constitute the first region-wide characterization of a non-toxigenic genotype with zoonotic potential and MDR. We raise the possibility that, due to the lack of inclusion of AST in current diagnostic algorithms or its circulation in hospital settings, this genotype may act as a vector of MDR.
