The meaning of youth is revealed as extremely complex and contains the historical conditions that determine its specificity as an object of study. Its characterization depends on different variables, the most notable being, social differentiation, gender, generation and insertion in the family and in other institutions. There is not one youth; there are different ways of being young that are observed on the economic, social and cultural level.
The objective of the article is to analyze the behavior of three groups of generations of young people residing in the city of Buenos Aires for 2017, in relation to the paths from school to work and its characteristics according to sex. The youth of the city is characterized, defined by its age in the adolescent groups (15-18), youth (19-24) and extended youth (25-29). The dimensions analyzed are those related to educational capital and the occupational insertions achieved. The analysis is exploratory and descriptive, using the 2017 Annual Household Survey of the city of Buenos Aires as data source.
The empirical evidence from 2017 shows that the uneven path among young people in the city of Buenos Aires has as its starting point the characteristics of the home. They determine the investment opportunities in education that families make for their children and, with it, when and with what preparation they enter the labor market.
