This paper studies the changes in parity in terms of intensity and age at births for three cohorts of Mexican women— those born in 1936-1938; in 1951-1953, and in 1966-1968—by applying the event history techniques to a retrospective demographic survey. Important changes in both aspects can be seen for the younger cohort in comparison with the older ones. The proportion of women with at least three children is lower, and the births takes place later in life. These are unmistakable signs of how spread birth control has been in Mexican society since the 1970s. This generational shift is related to another set of vital transitions undergone by transitional cohorts in the personal and also in the family.
