In the last five years, the formal labor market in Mexico has faced instability and insecurity. From our perspective, two main causes are identified: one, the economic mitigation policy promoted by the current federal administration between March and July 2020, in order to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the country; two, the strategy of flexibilization of work promoted by business organizations. The objective of this work is to offer statistical evidence on the instability and insecurity of formal employment in Mexico during the period 2019-2023, based on the capture, processing and analysis of the information provided by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). According to the information, the generation and/or loss in the total volume of the labor force varies in the study period, by type of contract and by sex. In short, it is observed that instability and insecurity in the formal labor market is not only temporary. In turn, it constitutes a structural component in the performance of the formal labor market.
