This article will analyze the development of archival science in Honduras, examining archival practices during the colonial period, the 19th century, and the 20th century. It will discuss the role played by the National Archives of Honduras (ANH) since its founding and its profile in the 20th century. Subsequently, it will debate the impact of 21st-century archival legislation and the ANH’s renewed prominence. Finally, it will address the need for archival professionalization and the efforts made to realize this project. In this sense, this work seeks to encourage critical discussion to build an archival culture in line with the demands of the 21st century, proposing paths to modernization from a post-custodial perspective of archives.
