THE SURNAME QUESADA IN HONDURAS, BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL TRANSCRIPTION AND THE EDUCATIONAL RESOLUTION

Abstract

The variation in the spelling or way of writing surnames is related to the phonemes and transcription processes that have occurred over time; This is the case of the surname Quesada, originally from the town of the province of Jaen Andalusia in Spain, and inherited through the mother’s side by former head of the Federal Republic of Central America José Francisco Morazán Quesada.The Ministry of Education of Honduras determined that the 2024 school year would be named after this character, however, this determination led to a debate about the use of the “s” or “z” in the way the surname is written. Using the methodology of history, based on primary and secondary sources from the years 1750 to 1805 and books published from 1882 to 2011 respectively, the evolution of the way of writing said surname is detailed, determining that there is no standardized form, however, in the oldest documentation the use of “s” predominates. In that sense, this Secretary of State determines that the spelling in Morazán’s last name, which must be used for official acts, is Quesada.
