Pesticides in Honduras: Challenges in regulation and scientific approach

Abstract

Pesticide use and exposure in Honduras pose inescapable public health challenges. This article addresses the challenges in the regulation and scientific approach to pesticides in Honduras. The lack of sampling and testing programmes to detect potentially hazardous products, as well as easy access to professional-grade pesticides in urban and rural households, are highlighted as major concerns. Weaknesses are identified in key aspects of the regulation and scientific approach to pesticides, including the lack of rigour in the risk assessment and scientific testing required for approval, as well as limitations in the technical capacity and human resources of the agencies responsible for registration. The importance of effective training programmes for local pesticide vendors is emphasized, as well as educating the general population about the risks of pesticide exposure. This critical analysis highlights the need to improve the regulation and scientific approach to pesticides in Honduras to protect public health and the environment.
