Objective: To analyze the scope, technologies, and limitations of forensic genetic genealogy in the inference of multigenerational relationships, addressing key concepts such as identity-by-descent and identity-by-state segments.
Background: Forensic genetics has historically supported human identification through the analysis of short tandem repeats, highly effective markers for the inference of close biological relationships. However, their analytical capacity is limited when evaluating distant or multigenerational biological relationships.
Conclusions: Forensic genetic genealogy does not constitute a substitute for conventional forensic methodologies but rather a high-value complementary resource. Its application must be contextualized, technically robust, and conducted within solid ethical and regulatory frameworks to ensure responsible use in forensic investigations.
