Telemedicine and its bioethical and medico-legal challenges. A Narrative review.

Introduction: The expansion of telemedicine raises important questions in the bioethical and medico-legal fields, making it necessary to analyze the bioethical and medico-legal challenges arising from its application.
Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted through searches in Elsevier, Virtual Health Library, Dialnet, ScienceDirect, LILACS, and PubMed. Keywords in Spanish and English were used, including: telemedicine, health legislation, medical jurisprudence, legal liability, health service coverage, forensic medicine, and bioethics. The search was limited to articles published between 2016 and 2025.
Results: A total of 190 records were identified; 151 articles were excluded for not being related to the topic and eight were removed as duplicates. Five documents from external sources were added, resulting in 36 studies selected for the final analysis.
Conclusion: There are limitations in the regulatory framework, in ensuring quality of care, and in the security and protection of patient data, among others. The main bioethical and medico-legal challenges include informed consent, confidentiality, information security, the weakening of the doctor–patient relationship, and quality of care—basic pillars that lack clear regulation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Honduras.
