Antonio Abad Ramírez and Fernández Fontecha: Rector of the Central University and cultural promoter (1888-1889)

In this article, we explore the actions of Dr. Antonio Abad Ramírez and Fernández Fontecha during the two years that he presided over the Central University of Honduras. From his position, Dr. Ramírez made important contributions to the society of the liberal era, founding the Scientifi c-Literary Academy, publishing the newspaper La Nación and the fortnightly La Academia, trying to establish a School of Fine Arts, extending the possessions of the University to the claim the annex building to the Convent of La Merced and leading a diplomatic mission that recruited various international professionals. In addition to this, Dr. Ramírez left various speeches and travel letters that, in addition to their valuable literary content, are of historical value, being a portrait of Honduras at the end of the 19th century
