Abstract

Improper management of household solid waste in El Salvador has generated serious environmental and public health problems. Urban concentration and increased consumption patterns have contributed to the growth of waste generation, increasing waste production to 3,676 tons per day in 2020 and reaching an average of 4,226.48 tons of waste per day in 2022. Poor management and irresponsible disposal have led to water, soil, and air pollution, as well as harming the well-being of the population. The consequences of poor waste management also extend to the economic sphere, generating significant additional costs for cities and governments. Furthermore, the cleanup of affected areas and improving the infrastructure necessary for proper waste treatment represent a considerable financial burden. The main factors driving this problem are population growth, irresponsible consumerism, a lack of environmental education, and inadequate waste collection management. To address these challenges, various laws and strategies have been implemented, such as the Comprehensive Waste Management and Recycling Promotion Law (2020) and the Special Law on Waste Collection, Utilization, and Final Disposal (2024), which seek to promote the circular economy and safe f inal disposal. Furthermore, national assessments, plans, and policies have been developed to improve comprehensive waste management and raise public awareness to mitigate the problem and build a sustainable future.
