Introduction. During the second semester of 2016, a deficiency of 95% was observed indengue IgM tests of the national dengue surveillance, an unusual behavior for the period of the year and the presence of arbovirosis in El Salvador.
Objective. Identify IgM antibodies for chikungunya and zika in the dengue surveillance samples.
Methodology. Four hundred twenty six sera were analyzed, from the health care centers of the Ministry of Health of El Salvador, for the surveillance of dengue, from the period between epidemiological week 26 to 52. The sera were processed with ELISA tests, NovaLisa Zika IgM u-capture virus and NovaLisa Chikungunya IgM u-capture virus to determine the presence of antibodies for chikungunya and zika. The IgM status for dengue was previously known.
Results. A prevalence of IgM antibodies for arboviruses other than dengue was found of 30.8% (131 of 426 sera), the prevalence of IgM for chikungunya was 22.3% (95 of 426 sera), IgM antibodies to Zika were 5.6% (24 of 426 sera), sera were identified with antibodies for two arboviruses in 2.7% (12 of 426 sera).
Conclusions. During the second semester of 2016, in the surveillance samples the presence of IgM for dengue, chikungunya and zika was confirmed, the highest prevalence was chikungunya; zika and dengue presented similar prevalence. Individual surveillance of dengue, chikungunya and zika makes integrated surveillance of arboviruses difficult.
