Abstract

Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees, likes it or not, globalization is a fact of life—something that has been imposed on us and has clear manifestations. This globalization has negative effects on peripheral countries, particularly on the most disadvantaged sectors. The alternative is to strengthen the national state that neoliberalism has weakened, to foster comprehensive democracy, and to encourage the participation of an informed and active citizenry. Only through a national state with these characteristics can we aspire to a more humane globalization that serves the interests of the majority, not just a select few.
