I TESOL Conference at UNAN-Managua/CUR-Estelí as a strategy for strengthening the teaching of English

Abstract

In today’s global context, the English language has established itself as an essential tool for international communication, academic mobility and professional development. In this sense, the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languagues (TESOL) approach arises as a response to the need to update English teaching methodologies to non-native speakers, prioritizing the use of the language in authentic communication contexts. This essay analyzes the significant contributions of the I TESOL Conference to the strengthening of English language teaching in the Bachelor’s Degree in Education Sciences with a major in English at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Managua/CUR-Estelí, held in 2025. The contribution of the conference to the enhancement of speaking and writing skills is examined from the perspectives of the communicative approach, active methodologies, and the development of intercultural competencies. The results of the analysis show that the conference provided an alternative space to the traditional classroom, favoring experiential learning, academic exchange and the pedagogical integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). In addition, it is highlighted that these experiences promoted student participation and critical reflection on teaching practice. However, the need to strengthen the mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating the transfer of acquired learning to educational practice is identified. In conclusion, the I TESOL Conference is established as a valuable strategy for the ongoing professional development of teachers and enhancing the quality of English education.Keywords: Communicative skills; English language teaching; Teacher training; Active methodologies; TESOL.
