The bioeconomy: a means of transforming agricultural production and rural development in Nicaragua

Abstract

The bioeconomic paradigm emerged as a need to find innovative strategies and transform agricultural production, promoting sustainable and resilient farming practices that foster changes in Nicaraguan rural development while respecting the future of ecosystems. This essay is divided into three parts: a. Conceptions: bioeconomy, agricultural production, and rural development; b. Pillars for transitioning to a bioeconomy: technological innovation, environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and social participation; c. Impacts of the bioeconomy: new markets, diversification of agricultural production, protection, conservation, and restoration of natural resources, reduction of fossil fuel inputs and application of local biological products, and enhancement of rural development (local job creation, income generation, and capacity building). The objective of this essay is to transition from conventional agricultural production to a bioeconomy production approach, considering the bioeconomy as a key driver of Nicaraguan agricultural production and rural development, for a resilient and environmentally responsible economy.
