The Biotechnology Laboratory of UNAN-Managua
presents its experience in conducting research that
started from the need to contribute to the improvement
of a national problematic. These researches, have
generated innovations in different fields through the
conception of products with marketable potential
that contribute to the sustainability of the institution
and using biotechnology as an accessible and low
cost alternative. The innovations are focused on
environmental and agricultural problems and include
different stages: from laboratory-level analysis and
experiments, to field validation. A key aspect in the
development of these researches and innovations is
the inter-institutional collaboration that facilitates the
processes and the dissemination of the results. In this
paper, we are presenting the development of a bio
insecticide for the control of beans and corn pests, the
identification of plants and microorganisms with phytoand
bio-remedial potential, as well as the formulation
of a hygienic product made out of a household waste.
All these innovations are in different stages: some
in the process of development and validation, and
others and others are in the process of authorization
management by the competent authority to allow
their distribution and commercialization at the national
level.
