In El Salvador, traditional pig farming has become a significant source of income for many families engaged in pork production. However, this type of farming lacks proper facilities and sanitary standards for raising pigs intended for human consumption. Although greater attention has been given in recent years to viral and bacterial infections in both technified and non-technified pig farms, intestinal parasites such as Ascaris suum continue to have a significant economic impact. Therefore, this article presents the incidence of Ascaris suum stages in backyard pig feces in a specific geographic area of the Pasaquina municipality, La Union department.
Using a prospective longitudinal research approach, a group of participants was followed and observed over a period to gather information and record the results. The study included pig farms that adhere to hygiene and biosafety measures, raising pigs under conditions suitable for human consumption. However, backyard pig farming, which does not comply with these measures and sells its products in households and municipal markets, was also considered.
