Abstract

This essay analyzes the concept of autopoiesis, postulated by Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela over 50 years ago, as a theoretical framework for reinterpreting the educational system and teaching-learning processes. Employing a qualitative, theoretical-conceptual methodology based on a literature review and an interdisciplinary analysis of contributions from biology, systems sociology, and the philosophy of education, the study examines autopoiesis as a relational property that defines living systems in terms of their internal dynamics of self-production, autonomy, and operational closure. Drawing on Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory, the educational system is understood as an autopoietic, self-referential system that is structurally coupled with psychic and social systems, and whose primary function lies in the reproduction of its own operations. Within this framework, education is conceived as an emergent phenomenon observable in the transformations undergone by students. Furthermore, empathy is incorporated as a fundamental dimension of the educational process, approached from a perspective that integrates cognitive, emotional, and relational aspects. The essay concludes that applying the concept of autopoiesis allows for a reconceptualization of the nature of the educational system, highlighting its complexity, autonomy, and relational character, while underscoring the significance of emotions in the construction of meaningful learning experiences.
