Abstract

The article utilizes the first data made publicly available from the VII Population Census and VI Housing Census of El Salvador conducted in 2024, through the geoportal of the Central Reserve Bank. The objective is to use this data to update the information previously available on various indicators used by academia, the government, and private institutions for the development of policies, programs, and investments in the country. For example, the census found that the population is slightly smaller than the estimate provided by the United Nations, with a lower proportion of men than women. Additionally, fertility rates continue to decline, while both child and elderly mortality rates are also decreasing, leading to an aging population. Because of this, the “demographic dividend” of the economically active population remains, with the majority employed in the private sector. The data also confirm a significant level of international emigration, predominantly among young men, with the United States being the main destination. This migration has resulted in a widespread distribution of remittances, received by 27% of households. Regarding housing, nearly one in five homes is unoccupied, particularly in remote areas, mainly because they are for “occasional use” followed by being “abandoned.” As for household goods, the majority of households have a mobile phone, refrigerator, and television, but fewer own a washing machine, microwave, or any vehicle. This updated data will serve to ensure and enhance the comprehensive development of early childhood, families, and the country as a whole
