Abstract

Through an ethnobotanical survey taken in the town of La Venta we learned that Schoepfia schreberi from the family Olacaceae commonly known as "Palo de golpe" it is used to treat cuts and bruises by the residents of La Venta. The method of administration is oral using a decoction of the bark and by topic via applied cataplasm in the affected area.

In this study it was demonstrated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins. Tannins are astringent, anti-inflammatory, flavonoids report analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity, alkaloids are used for its analgesic properties, although the presence of alkaloids is reported there is not determined the type of alkaloid the plant possesses. We estimated that these compounds are responsible for the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity needed for treatment of cuts and bruises on patients.
