Abstract

In this study, we present results obtained through the didactic analysis of student productions regarding emerging variational thought, using an onto-semiotic approach of mathematics instruction and knowledge. The research sought as objective: to characterize and categorize productions identifying their characteristics, to discover the various manifestations of variational thought. The research was conducted within a regular course of beginning engineering calculus students at a university in the Maule Region of Chile. The written productions of the students and photographic and film records of their study sessions were analyzed, categories of manifestations of variational thought according to the first level of analysis, provided by the onto-semiotic approach were generated. The results of this research showed that many of the students made use of certain aspects of variational thought.
