Abstract

In Honduras there are not many studies that analyze in a global way the mental disorders related to the diseases of chronic medical diseases that affect adults. Objectives: The aim was to analyze the relationship between the prevalence of mental disorders and the prevalence of no communicable chronic medical diseases in adults, in order to know or not the presence of these disorders and conditions. Methods: 300 rural respondents from the municipalities of Cedros and El Porvenir, in the department of Francisco Morazán, were studied. At the same time, 300 adult men and women from the department of Olancho and residing in the departmental capital of Juticalpa, were studied urban and rural; both studies carried out in 2016 through the SRQ Scale: It serves to screen for possible mental disorders in adults and the WHO Survey to detect symptoms of no communicable chronic diseases (own elaboration). This research used a quantitative approach, with a correlational, cross-sectional and non-experimental design. Results: In the Department of Francisco Morazán rural area, the prevalence of probable mental disorders in the population with chronic medical diseases was 42.7%, being the most prevalent: depression with 38.6%, anxiety 29.2% and posttraumatic stress with 11.7%. It was also found that 55.7% of people over 18 years of Olancho have symptoms of probable mental disorder being the most prevalent: drugs with 31.1%, depression 30.7%, and anxiety with a 26%. In both departments, people 51 and older had the highest percentages of possible mental disorders and chronic diseases. Conclusion: through this study we can observe the importance of knowing psychological and emotional manifestations that can be presented by the people surveyed who refer with chronic conditions and the need to implement prevention strategies, since due to the coexistence of both conditions should be considered in the planning of primary health care services given the high costs and duration of treatments that these patients require.
