Use of alliums as growth promoters in Cobb 500 chickens

Background: The use of growth-promoting antibiotics to increase productivity began to have an impact on public health by generating bacterial resistance; alternatives such as phytogenic compounds emerged. Methodology: 150 one-day-old chickens were used, assigned in a completely random design to three treatments with 50 chickens each. Three treatments were studied in drinking water: T1: Control (Water); T2: 6% alliaceae and T3: 8% alliaceae. An analysis of variance and Duncan's test were performed with the InfoStat statistical program version 2008. The study lasted 35 days and feed consumption, weight gain and feed conversion were evaluated. Results: No significant differences were found (P>0.05). The highest consumption was obtained by the groups that received the 6% and 8% alliaceae treatments with 127,892 g and 128,237 g respectively, followed by the control group with 119,261 g. The greatest weekly average weight gain was presented by the groups that received the 6% and 8% alliaceae treatments with 424 g and 411 g respectively, followed by the control group with 399 g. The group that received the 6% treatment obtained a better feed conversion with 1.32; followed by the control group with 1.33; while the 8% alliaceae group obtained the poorest feed conversion with 1.38. Conclusion: The 6% treatment improved weight gain and feed conversion by using the feed more efficiently, due to its effect as a growth promoter.
