Exhibition of the artist Cruz Bermúdez in the frame of the commemoration of Heritage Month African in Honduras

Abstract

The sample consisted of ten paintings on display, nine by the artist Bermúdez and one by his wife María López, who is also an excellent painter. The works portray the daily life of the Garífuna people, which gives them a special value, since in addition to artistic skill they add to this the importance of the theme addressed and the concern of the author to portray his culture and for leaving in his artistic legacy part of the traditions with which he grew up and that he seeks pass on to new generations. Among the exhibited works was a portrait of the leader Garífuna Celeo Álvarez Casildo (1959-2016) as part of the scheduled events, for the At the end of the month, the book Vida de Don Celeo Álvarez Casildo was presented, which is why the exhibition of the sober portrait made by the artist of this Garífuna leader became a true success that enriched the posthumous tribute to who has been a historic leader of the town garinagu. This particular work reveals the artist Bermúdez as an accomplished portrait painter, his almost photographic finish is contrasted with a freer brushstroke in her clothing, in especially in his colorful kufi that always characterized the late leader. It should be noted that this portrait is part of a larger series that Bermúdez has made as a personal tribute to different personalities of the Garinagu people who have excelled in different areas, and who reaffirm the consistency of his plastic work and his intellectual and professional growth, since the Portrait art is not easy, it not only requires manual skill or technical mastery of the material, but it also implies a diligent study of what identifies a particular person and distinguishes it from the others, it is not about painting the resemblance of the sitter, but its essence or being interior, qualities that are perfectly perceived in the work reproduced on the next page and which at first glance denotes that it portrays a relevant personality of social and cultural history of our country, qualities present in the aforementioned painting.
