In 1968, when in light of the Vatican Council its historic meeting in Medellín, Colombia, the church they represented made official its option for the poor. The Medellín documents, especially those of Justice and Peace, were the compass and foundation of the social commitment of millions of Latin American Christians, from various social classes, united to fight for a more humane society.
