Abstract

The objective of this article is to present the study of community, as a pedagogical tool for the teaching and learning of national geography. This research arises from the need to design and implement strategies that allow a contextualized geographic education in reality, beyond the textbook, which is focused on the analysis of the problems present in its immediate environment. It is qualitative research oriented in the design of the field in situ, using observation and  interviews with students and teachers from the area of geography in the San  Joaquín municipality, Carabobo state in Venezuela, considered the key informants, who reside in the community. The proposed approach allowed the communities (locality, students and teachers) to be involved in the identification and recognition of their problems to propose solutions, through participatory diagnosis and the construction of community maps, achieving a critical vision of the space and its relationship with the economic, social, political, cultural and ideological practices of the place.
