In this text, we describe a classroom experience that intended to characterize the knowledge that sixth grade students of the San Lorenzo Rural Educational Institution have on the plants of the region. The focus of the experience was made taking into account certain aspects of the qualitative research, and the information was collected in folders and workshops written both individually and as a group. According to the analysis of experience, students' knowledge regarding plants can be organize into five categories: plant utilization, process of growing food plants, relationships with other living beings, types of fertilizers and diseases. The results of this work invite us to reflect on the importance of this type of knowledge for the teaching of the natural sciences, as well as to rethink and reconfigure alternative models more inclusive and contextual.
