Abstract

The calculation of ecological flows of rivers in El Salvador, is based on hydraulic methodologies oriented the use of water, without taking integrity and ecological function. The case study of the Cara Sucia River is presented, where the ecological flow was determined by eco-hydraulic methodologies using Amatitlania nigrofasciata as bioindicator. The habitat suitability curve of A. nigrofasciata is estimated with depth, water velocity and type of substrate. The species prefers habitats with depths of 0.2-0.7 m (juveniles and adults) and up to 0.8 m in the rainy season; on rocky substrates, litter and submerged vegetation, with speeds of 0.3-0.6 m/s in both seasons. The simulation of the physical environment showed flow rates of 1.0 m3/s with habitable conditions
for the species and potential habitat with flows of 2.2 m3/s (juveniles) and 5.0 m3/s (adults). Conditions of water stress due to climate change and anthropogenic activities will affect this ecosystem, eliminating local ecological and economic functions.
