The time series of wave simulations are broken down into series of medium and extreme field events, characterized by short and long-term statistical methods. Generally extreme field events have a high variability in intensity and frequency. The WAM model simulates wave parameters: significant height, period of the most energetic component, direction of propagation. To characterize the extreme field off the coast of El Salvador, time series (february 1968 – december 2009), were processed and analyzed in three locations from simulations carried out with the WAM model. The extreme swell that arrived on the country's coast between May 2-4, 2015 had a maximum power of 73 kW-m-1, which has a return period of five years and a probability of occurrence of 67 % for five years, 89 % for ten years and 100 % for 25 years of useful life.
