The presence of five species of the Otariidae family, three species of the Balaenopteridae family, one specie of the Eschiteridae family, twelve species of the Delphinidae family, one specie of the Kogiidae family, one specie of the Physeteridae family and three species of the Ziphidae family: for a total of 26 species of marine mammals. Mostly of the species are known because of stranding, the other species rely on research surveys. Six species are accidental, since they do not occur naturally in Central American waters. Eight species are migratory and 12 species are normal residents with very low levels of detection from the coast. Only four species are considered that occur frequently in coastal waters: Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), which has a marked migratory behavior, the Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuata), the Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Five species are listed threatened or globally endangered.
