New contributions to the biodiversity of brachyuran crabs in El Salvador

Taxonomic collections make possible the generation, validation and improvement of biodiversity knowledge, keeping the record of species through v the times on the sites. Knowledge about brachyuran crabs of El Salvador is limited, and in recent years research has focused on some species of commercial interest. Given this information gap, an investigation was carried out on the richness of crabs of El Salvador that are deposited in biological collections around the world. To do this, 15 databases with open access online were reviewed and the zoology museum collections, University of Costa Rica, were visited, obtaining a total of 51 species, of which 26 are new reports for the country, which were collected in the period 1924 to 2001, increasing the biodiversity of the group and highlighting the need to focus greater research efforts of biodiversity, zoogeography, distribution and ecology of brachyuran crab species in the country.
