Abstract

This article makes an analysis of the evolution of the economic and political group nominated in 2001 by Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs as the BRICS, an acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and as of 2009 South Africa. The article addresses the origin and expectations with which the group was born, its current and prospective situation of being the driving force of a new economic, political and commercial order at a global level. Finally, the authors present some conclusions of the analysis that pose possibilities and obstacles, which as a block in general -and as countries in particular- should be considered for their geoeconomic, commercial and political consolidation.
